The .BIP file extension is primarily associated with KeyShot, a standalone 3D rendering and animation application developed by Luxion. A .BIP file acts as a complete 3D rendering scene, storing 3D models, material assignments, lighting setups, and camera angles. Alternatively, .BIP files are generated by Bio-Rad Laboratories hardware to store biological imaging data (such as gel electrophoresis images), or by Autodesk 3ds Max to save Character Studio biped animation rigs.
The main disadvantage of the .BIP format is its strictly proprietary nature. KeyShot scene files are highly unoptimized for sharing; they can easily exceed hundreds of megabytes and require an expensive commercial software license just to open. They are completely unsupported by web browsers or standard OS-level 3D viewers. Furthermore, standard .BIP files do not embed external texture maps, leading to broken scenes if moved between computers without packaging. Similarly, Bio-Rad gel images require specialized scientific software like ImageJ to view the raw data.
To overcome these limitations, conversion is necessary. To share 3D models with clients or use them in web environments, convert the 3D data from KeyShot to OBJ, FBX, or GLTF.
