About 004 files
A .004 file is most commonly a Split Archive Part 4 file. When users need to bypass strict email attachment limits or upload size caps, they use compression tools to split large archives (like ZIP or RAR) into smaller, numbered chunks (001, 002, 003, .004). In rarer cases, a .004 file acts as a DACS Toolkit II data file, which is structured internally as a TIFF image, or a split installation file for Siemens WinCC software updates.
The most significant disadvantage of a split archive .004 file is its complete dependency on the rest of the sequence. On its own, a .004 file is entirely useless. You cannot extract its contents, view the data, or bypass the missing segments. If 001, 002, or 003 is missing or corrupted, the entire archive fails to open. Furthermore, proprietary update files like those for Siemens are locked to their specific software ecosystem.
You cannot convert an archive sequence file directly into a document or image. You must first rebuild the archive by placing all numbered parts in the same folder and extracting them with a tool like 7-Zip or WinRAR. Once you extract the original files, you can convert them to modern formats. If your .004 file is actually a DACS Toolkit image, it is already a TIFF. For web compatibility, convert this TIFF data to WebP or JPG. For archiving, convert it to PDF/A.
Convert.Guru analyzes your 004 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert 004 file to ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, LZMA, CAB, ACE, ARJ or LHA, you can use 7-Zip or similar software from the "Split Archive File Part" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to 004, try 7-Zip or another comparable tool in the "Split Archive File Part" category.
The 004 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our 004 converter.
