A .tbk file is most frequently an Asymetrix ToolBook (later SumTotal ToolBook) interactive book file. These are legacy multimedia courseware or training applications, effectively functioning as 'software books' containing pages, scripts, and media. The biggest challenge with ToolBook files is their obsolescence; the software has been discontinued, and modern operating systems often cannot run the 16-bit or 32-bit runtimes required to view them. They are proprietary binary containers, meaning you cannot simply open them in a text editor to retrieve the content.
Another common use for the .tbk extension is as a backup file. Users of The Bat!, a secure email client, encounter .tbk files as compressed backups of their message base. Similarly, legacy database systems like Microsoft Visual FoxPro and dBASE generate .tbk files as backups for memo fields (text data linked to database records).
For ToolBook archives, the ideal conversion target is .HTML5 (if you have the original exporting tools) or PDF for static archiving of the page layouts. For The Bat! users, the goal is often restoring email data back to the client or converting to MBOX or EML for migration. For database backups, renaming the extension to TXT or FPT (FoxPro Memo) often allows raw data recovery, though formatting may be lost.
