A .000 file is a highly ambiguous file extension used primarily as the first part of a multi-volume split archive (like a split ZIP), or as a sequential output for specialized data. Typical use cases range from storing Electronic Navigational Charts (IHO S-57) and FANUC CNC controller ROMs to Italian MUD tax declarations. Windows CHKDSK also generates .000 files when recovering corrupted file fragments.
Because the extension is generic, opening it depends entirely on its origin. You might use 7-Zip to extract split archives, EEGLAB for EEG data, or MicroStation for CAD plots.
The primary disadvantage of a .000 file is that the extension tells you almost nothing about what is inside. If it is a split archive, you cannot extract it without the rest of the sequence (001, 002, etc.). If it is a proprietary scientific file, it requires expensive, niche software to read. If it is a recovered system fragment, it may be completely corrupted or useless. If it is a recovered image, convert it to JPG for easy viewing. If it is a CAD plot, convert it to PDF for universal sharing. For split archives, recombine and convert them into a standard ZIP.
