About VMS files

The .vms file extension is a dual-purpose format that creates significant confusion for users. Primarily (51% of usage), it represents VAMAS (Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards) data, a standard ASCII format used by scientists to exchange surface chemical analysis data like XPS or AES. While these files are text-based, they contain rigid headers and data blocks that are difficult to visualize without specialized, often expensive software like CasaXPS. Simply opening them in a text editor provides raw numbers but no graphical spectra, making them unsuitable for presentation or quick analysis.

Alternatively, .vms files are proprietary video recordings generated by Foscam IP cameras and NVRs (Video Management Systems). These files are problematic because they use non-standard codecs that fail to play in default operating system media players like Windows Media Player or QuickTime. Users are often left with critical security footage they cannot view or share with law enforcement.
