About XLB files
The .XLB file extension primarily identifies a Microsoft Excel Toolbar Settings File, used to store custom configurations for ribbons, toolbars, and menu layouts. Unlike XLS or XLSB files, an .XLB file contains no spreadsheet data, formulas, or charts; it strictly maintains the User Interface (UI) environment. Users frequently encounter these files when backing up settings or troubleshooting Excel crashes, as a corrupted .XLB is a common cause of missing toolbars or startup failures. Because the format is proprietary and binary-encoded for Microsoft Excel, it cannot be "opened" to view data and offers no direct conversion path to standard document formats like PDF or DOCX. However, for the minority of files originating from OpenOffice (where .XLB serves as a Module Information File for Basic scripts), the content is often XML-based.
