About OLD files

The .OLD file extension is a generic marker used by operating systems and software to denote a backup copy of a file that has been superseded by a newer version. While statistically often associated with LevelDB database logs used by Google applications, it is most commonly a standard file - such as a text document, EXE, or ZIP archive - that has simply been renamed. This creates a significant user downside: because the extension does not describe the data structure (MIME type), standard operating systems like Microsoft Windows cannot associate it with the correct application, leaving the file inaccessible.

To utilize these files, users must determine the underlying format. For example, Valheim gamers may find character data backups as .OLD files that need to be renamed to FCH to restore progress. System administrators often encounter them as previous configurations or executable backups created during software updates. Attempting to open them in a text editor usually results in garbled binary data unless the source was plain text. The most effective workflow is to analyze the file signature (magic bytes) to identify the true format - whether it is a PDF, JPG, or database file - and then convert or rename it accordingly.

Convert.Guru analyzes your OLD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted LDB, ODT, LOG, BOOKMARKS, MANIFEST-000001, CURRENT, JPG, PDF, CMP, LOGIN DATA, XLB, LUA and DAT files.

The OLD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OLD converter.
