About WTD files
The .WTD file extension is most prominently known as a Windows Texture Dictionary used by the Rockstar Games RAGE Engine, specifically for titles like Grand Theft Auto IV. These files function as containers that bundle multiple texture assets - such as character skins, vehicle decals, and environmental surfaces - into a single compressed archive. Because .WTD files are proprietary game assets, they cannot be opened by standard image viewers like Windows Photos or intended for direct editing in software like Adobe Photoshop without first being unpacked.
A common friction point for modders and gamers is the inability to view or modify these textures directly. To edit a vehicle livery or map texture, users must first convert the .WTD contents into standard raster formats. The ideal workflow involves extracting these assets to PNG or TGA for high-quality editing, or DDS (DirectDraw Surface) to maintain mipmaps and compression settings compatible with the game engine. Once edited, they must be repacked into the .WTD format to work in-game.
A secondary but significant use of the .WTD extension is for WebStorage Thermo Data files generated by T&D Corporation data loggers. These files contain recorded temperature and humidity metrics. Users often find themselves locked into using proprietary viewing software to read these logs. For data analysis, reporting, or archiving, it is highly recommended to convert these logs to CSV for use in Microsoft Excel or PDF for universal document sharing.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WTD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The WTD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WTD converter.
