About YTD files

The .YTD file extension is a proprietary Texture Dictionary used by the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE). It is predominantly found in Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2. It functions as a specialized archive that bundles multiple texture images - such as diffuse maps, normal maps, and specular maps - applied to 3D models within the game.

To view or extract the contents of a .YTD file, game modders typically rely on specialized third-party community tools like OpenIV. Official support from Rockstar Games for exporting or viewing these files outside of the game engine does not exist.

The main disadvantage of the .YTD format is its closed, highly specialized nature. You cannot open it natively in Windows, macOS, or standard image editors like Adobe Photoshop. Furthermore, the files can be exceptionally large depending on the resolution and quantity of the bundled textures. Standard online converters routinely fail to process them because they do not understand the RAGE engine's internal compression and header structures.

Users typically need to extract the contents of a .YTD file into standard formats like DDS (DirectDraw Surface), PNG, or JPG. This allows for the editing of the textures before repacking them back into a modified .YTD file for the game.

Because this is a closed, proprietary format, extraction is notoriously difficult. Often, only community-developed modding software can properly read the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or extracting the textures may still be possible directly from your browser.

Convert.Guru analyzes your YTD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted YDD, PNG, YFT, DDS, YDR, RAR, YDT, JPG, ZIP, OTD, YMT, RPF and MP4 files.
