About YTD files

A .YTD file is a Texture Dictionary used by the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE), most notably powering titles like Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5). These archives serve as containers for multiple texture maps - such as diffuse, normal, and specular maps - applied to 3D models (High Quality characters, vehicles, and buildings) within the game world. Because .YTD files are highly proprietary binary archives optimized for real-time rendering, they cannot be opened by standard image viewers or editing software like Adobe Photoshop or Windows Photo Viewer.

This format is a common source of problems for modders and designers who wish to customize game assets. To modify a vehicle skin or character clothing, you must first extract the internal textures from the .YTD container. The standard workflow involves using specialized tools like OpenIV to export the contents to editable formats. For general editing, converting to PNG or TIFF is recommended to preserve quality. For technical re-importing into the game engine, textures must often be converted to DDS (DirectDraw Surface) to handle mipmaps and compression correctly.

Convert.Guru analyzes your YTD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted YDD, PNG, YFT, DDS, YDR, RAR, YDT, JPG, ZIP, OTD, YMT, RPF and MP4 files.
