About WBFS files
The .WBFS file extension stands for Wii Backup File System. It is a specialized disk image format created by the Nintendo Wii homebrew community, primarily by developer Waninkoko, to store Wii games on external USB drives or SD cards. These files are typically handled by homebrew apps on the Wii console, or PC tools like Dolphin Emulator and Wii Backup Manager. More information on Wii homebrew is available on Wikipedia. You may need to convert this file because the .WBFS format is highly proprietary and extremely limited outside the Wii ecosystem. While it effectively strips out dummy padding data found in standard ISO files to reduce game size, Windows, macOS, and standard disk mounting tools cannot natively read or open it. Attempting to mount the drive directly often triggers a prompt to format the disk, which would erase all data. The most common conversion targets are standard ISO files for accurate archival, or RVZ, a modern lossless compression format favored by emulation enthusiasts. Note that converting back to ISO reconstructs the missing padding data, significantly increasing the file size back to 4.37 GB. This file format is difficult to open or convert because it acts as a closed, specialized file system container. Standard online converters fail to process it due to both the proprietary architecture and the massive multi-gigabyte file sizes. Offline software is strictly required to unpack the actual game data.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WBFS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The WBFS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WBFS converter.
