About WBFS files
A .WBFS file is a Wii Backup File System image, a specialized disk image format developed by the Nintendo Wii homebrew community (specifically Waninkoko) to store game backups efficiently. Unlike raw ISO dumps which copy the entire 4.7GB DVD structure, .WBFS files are "scrubbed," meaning the dummy padding data originally used to fill the physical disc is stripped away. This often reduces the file size by 50-90% without losing any game data.
However, this efficiency comes with trade-offs. .WBFS is a non-standard format not natively supported by operating systems like Windows or macOS. While indispensable for loading games onto a Wii via USB loaders (like USB Loader GX), these files cannot be directly burned to a disc. Additionally, users sticking to the FAT32 file system for compatibility often face the 4GB file size limit, forcing the .WBFS image to be split into multiple parts (.wbfs and wbf1), creating management headaches.
For long-term archiving or playing on PC, converting .WBFS to ISO is standard procedure to restore the full disc image structure. For users of the Dolphin Emulator, converting to the modern RVZ format is highly recommended, as it offers similar compression to WBFS but with lossless data integrity and better emulator performance.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WBFS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert WBFS file to ISO, RVZ, WAD, WUP, EXE, BIN, CUE, PAK, PK3, PK4, BSP or MAP, you can use Dolphin Emulator or similar software from the "Wii Game Disc Image" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to WBFS, try Dolphin Emulator or another comparable tool in the "Wii Game Disc Image" category.
The WBFS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WBFS converter.
