A .WUX file is a Wii U Compressed Disk Image, created to store typically large 23GB+ Nintendo Wii U game dumps in a fraction of the space. While uncompressed WUD files contain exact bit-for-bit copies of a game disc (including gigabytes of empty padding), the .WUX format removes this dummy data to save storage, often reducing files to 2-5GB. These files are primarily designed for the Cemu emulator.
However, .WUX files introduce significant friction for users. They cannot be installed directly onto a physical Wii U console (which requires WUP installable files), and they often fail to load in emulators if the user is missing the specific keys.txt decryption entry for that game title. Additionally, newer versions of Cemu prefer the .WUA (Wii U Archive) format, which can bundle the base game, updates, and DLC into a single file, making .WUX an older, less convenient standard. Users typically need to convert .WUX back to WUD to extract game assets, or convert to .WUA for better emulation management.
