About SMD files
An .SMD file is primarily a Source Engine Model Data file developed by Valve Corporation. It stores uncompiled 3D meshes, skeletal structures, and animation sequences in a plain ASCII text format. Modders and game developers use these files as an intermediary format to compile 3D assets into MDL files for Source engine games like Half-Life 2, Portal, and Garry's Mod. A secondary, but distinct, use for the .SMD extension is for Sega Genesis / Mega Drive ROM backups created by legacy Super Magic Drive copier hardware.
The main disadvantage of the .SMD 3D format is its technical inefficiency. Because it stores complex skeletal and mesh data as human-readable plain text, file sizes often exceed 100MB for highly detailed models. Furthermore, it is a proprietary, hyper-specific format. Standard 3D software like Blender or Autodesk Maya cannot open .SMD files natively; they require community-built plugins such as Blender Source Tools. It is also completely unsupported by web browsers, mobile devices, and standard operating system previewers.
To make these files practically usable, conversion is highly recommended. For universal 3D editing and rigging, convert .SMD to FBX or OBJ. If you intend to display the 3D model on the web, convert it to GLTF or GLB. For 3D printing applications, convert to STL, though you will inherently lose all skeletal animation data. If you possess a Sega ROM .SMD file, converting it to standard MD or BIN formats ensures broader emulator compatibility. If you want to convert SMD file to MD, BIN, MDL, DIP, PDF, DAE, MAX, BLEND or MA, you can use Blender or similar software from the "3D Model and Animation Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to SMD, try Blender or another comparable tool in the "3D Model and Animation Data" category.
The SMD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SMD converter.
