About SMD files
The .smd (Source Model Data) file is primarily an intermediate 3D model format used by the Valve Source Engine. It stores uncompiled 3D mesh data, skeletal animations, and rigging information before they are compiled into the final proprietary MDL game file. Another common use for the .smd extension is for Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) game ROM dumps created by the vintage Super Magic Drive hardware copier.
Opening or editing .smd 3D files natively is difficult. The format is heavily tied to the Source ecosystem and requires specialized community-built plugins, such as the Source Tools add-on for Blender. Because .smd is an uncompressed, plain-text format, it generates massive file sizes. It cannot be viewed directly in web browsers or imported seamlessly into modern game engines without prior conversion. Similarly, Sega .smd ROM files are interleaved, meaning they are often incompatible with newer, streamlined emulators that expect standard binary formats.
To make Source engine models usable in modern platforms like Unity or Unreal Engine, you must convert .smd to FBX or OBJ. For web viewing and interactive display, convert to GLTF or GLB. If you have Sega ROMs, converting them to standard BIN or archiving them to ZIP saves space and fixes compatibility issues. Just drag and drop your .smd file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing heavy software.

If you want to convert SMD file to MD, BIN, MDL, DIP, PDF, DAE, MAX, BLEND or MA, you can use Valve Source SDK or similar software from the "Source Engine Model Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to SMD, try Valve Source SDK or another comparable tool in the "Source Engine Model Data" category.
The SMD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SMD converter.
