About VEG files
A .VEG file is the proprietary project format used by MAGIX VEGAS Pro (formerly Sony Vegas) for non-linear video editing. Unlike a finished video file, a .VEG file acts as a database or recipe: it stores the timeline structure, edit decision lists (EDLs), transition settings, and references to source media files located on your hard drive, but it typically does not contain the actual video or audio footage inside the file itself.
Because .VEG files are strictly proprietary project data, they present significant compatibility challenges. You cannot upload a .VEG file to YouTube or play it in VLC Media Player. Furthermore, version lock-in is a common friction point; a project saved in a newer version of VEGAS Pro often cannot be opened by older versions, and competing software like Adobe Premiere Pro cannot natively read the format. To share your work, you must convert (render) the project to a standard video container like MP4 or MOV (H.264/HEVC) for web compatibility. For archiving or transferring the timeline structure to other NLEs like DaVinci Resolve, the best conversion targets are XML (Final Cut Pro XML), AAF, or EDL.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VEG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted MP4, BAK, VF, MP3, EXE, AUP3, ZIP, PRPROJ, PNG, RAR, CDW, MXL and DAT files.
The VEG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VEG converter.
