A .PRPROJ file is a proprietary video editing project created by Adobe Premiere Pro. Unlike standard video files (like MP4 or MOV), a PRPROJ file does not contain actual video or audio data. Instead, it acts as a database referencing the location of media files on your hard drive, storing timeline sequences, transitions, effects settings, and edit decisions in a GZIP-compressed XML structure.
Users frequently encounter major friction when sharing these files. Sending a colleague just the .PRPROJ file results in the dreaded "Media Offline" error because they lack the source video clips. Furthermore, the format is strictly version-locked; a project saved in Premiere Pro 2024 typically cannot be opened in Premiere Pro 2023 without complex workarounds. The file is also useless for playback in standard media players like VLC or for uploading to YouTube.
To make the content usable, you must convert (render) the project or export the data. For web distribution and client reviews, the standard target is H.264 (.MP4). For high-fidelity mastering or archiving, convert to Apple ProRes (.MOV) or DNxHR. If you need to migrate the project timeline to other NLEs like DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro, you should export the project metadata to XML or AAF formats.
