About AUP3 files
The .AUP3 file serves as the unified project container for Audacity, the world's most popular open-source audio editor (introduced in version 3.0). Internally, this file is a SQLite database that encapsulates all audio tracks, gain adjustments, labels, and undo history into a single monolithic file, replacing the older AUP system that relied on a separate _data folder.
While convenient for editing, .AUP3 files present significant challenges for distribution. They are often massive (frequently exceeding gigabytes) because they store uncompressed PCM audio data inside a database structure. Crucially, they are not playable audio files; media players like VLC or Windows Media Player cannot decode them, and they cannot be uploaded directly to podcast hosts or streaming services. Because they are strictly proprietary to the editing environment, you face a "lock-in" where the content is inaccessible without the specific software.
To make your recording usable, you must convert the project into a standard audio stream. For web distribution and podcasts, convert the mix to MP3 or AAC to minimize file size. For mastering, archiving, or transfer to other DAWs (like Pro Tools), convert to WAV or FLAC to preserve lossless quality.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AUP3 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert AUP3 file to MP3, WAV, MP4, M4A, AUP, OGG, AAC, FLAC, WMA, AIFF, OPUS or ALAC, you can use Audacity or similar software from the "Audio Editing Project" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The AUP3 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AUP3 converter.
