About UPS files
A .UPS file is primarily a Universal Patching System file, a binary differential format used to distribute modifications, translations, and hacks for video game ROMs. Unlike the older IPS format, .UPS supports files larger than 16MB and utilizes CRC32 checksums to verify that the patch is being applied to the exact correct source file.
The main challenge users face is that a .UPS file is not executable and cannot be played directly in emulators like mGBA or VisualBoyAdvance. It relies on the user possessing the specific, unmodified "clean" ROM file (e.g., GBA, SFC, or NDS) to act as a base. Additionally, older patching utilities may not support UPS, forcing users to seek alternatives.
For gameplay, the "conversion" process involves applying the .UPS file to a base ROM to generate a playable game file. For archivists and developers, converting .UPS files to the more modern BPS (Beat Patching System) is recommended for smaller file sizes and reversible patching, or to IPS for legacy compatibility if the data is under 16MB. A secondary, unrelated use of this extension exists as a User Performance Set for Roland and Ketron musical keyboards, which are proprietary settings files locked to specific hardware.
Convert.Guru analyzes your UPS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert UPS file to GBA, EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP or SAV, you can use NUPS or similar software from the "ROM Patch Distribution" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to UPS, try NUPS or another comparable tool in the "ROM Patch Distribution" category.
The UPS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our UPS converter.
