Extract text from CAD and survey files (TOP)

The .TOP file extension is heavily fragmented, meaning it serves entirely different purposes depending on the software that created it. Most commonly, it is a TopSolid CAD/CAM project file used to store 3D models and manufacturing instructions. Alternatively, it is widely used as a Topographical survey data file generated by equipment from Topcon Corporation or Aplitop. In electronics, a .TOP file is often a standard text-based Gerber RS-274X format file representing the top copper layer of a Printed Circuit Board (PCB), exported from software like Altium Designer. Less frequently, it functions as an e-Sword database file for theological notes, or a Gromacs topology file.
The massive variety of .TOP formats creates major compatibility headaches. A TopSolid CAD file requires a proprietary, expensive license and is unreadable by standard CAD tools like AutoCAD. Topographical survey data locked in a .TOP format is rarely recognized by standard GIS applications without intermediate processing. PCB layout files are completely meaningless outside of a dedicated Gerber viewer. None of these variations can be natively previewed by web browsers or standard operating systems, making sharing raw .TOP files incredibly frustrating for clients and collaborators.
To ensure usability, you must convert these files based on their original intent. For 3D CAD collaboration, convert .TOP to universal formats like STEP or IGES. For 2D drawing reviews or Gerber PCB layouts, convert to PDF or DXF. If you are handling topographical data, extract the coordinates to CSV or SHP.
