About NZ files
The .NZ file extension is primarily associated with NanoZip, an experimental high-performance file archiver developed by Sami Runsas in the late 2000s. Known for its extremely high compression ratios - often outperforming standard ZIP and even RAR files of its era - NanoZip used advanced proprietary algorithms (like the "nz" format) to shrink data significantly.
However, the format poses a significant challenge for modern users: NanoZip is discontinued, and the .NZ format is not supported by popular archiving tools like WinRAR or standard 7-Zip. This creates a "digital lock-in" scenario where users possess valuable compressed data (backups, old software, or media) but lack the specific, obsolete binary (nz.exe) required to extract it. Furthermore, because the format was experimental (often stuck in alpha versions), files may have compatibility quirks depending on the exact version used to create them.
A secondary, less common use (approx. 8%) is found in enterprise storage environments as NetApp ONTAP compressed core dump files, used for system debugging. These are typically proprietary system logs not meant for general consumer access.
Best Conversion Targets:
- For General Access: Convert to ZIP or 7Z. This ensures your files are accessible on any modern operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux) without requiring specialized, defunct software.
- For Linux/Unix Archiving: Convert to TAR or .TAR.GZ if preserving file permissions is a priority.
- For Storage: If you simply need to view the contents, extracting the archive to a folder is the most practical first step.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The NZ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NZ converter.
