About NZ files

The .NZ file extension primarily belongs to the NanoZip compressed archive format, created by Sami Runsas. A secondary use is for compressed core dump files generated by NetApp ONTAP storage systems. NanoZip was an experimental archiver designed for maximum compression ratios. NetApp core dumps capture system memory during a crash for diagnostics.

To open a NanoZip archive, you must use the original NanoZip command-line utility. NetApp core dumps are analyzed using proprietary debugging tools by NetApp support.

The .NZ format has severe disadvantages. NanoZip is abandonware. Development ceased around 2011, and the format remains entirely proprietary. Mainstream archiving software like 7-Zip or WinRAR cannot extract these files. Relying on this format risks permanent data loss if the unsupported extraction tool fails on modern operating systems. Meanwhile, NetApp core dump files are massive, often consuming gigabytes of disk space, and contain raw hex data that is unreadable to standard end-users.

If you have a NanoZip archive, you should convert it to ZIP or 7Z. These target formats guarantee universal, long-term compatibility across all operating systems. You will lose the extreme compression ratio of NanoZip, but you will gain reliable access to your files.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because it relies on closed, proprietary algorithms. Standard online converters fail because they lack the obscure, outdated binaries required to decompress the data. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SQX, SREP, PPP and AU files.
