About SKETCH files

The .SKETCH file extension is exclusively used by Sketch, a leading vector graphics editor for macOS focused on UI/UX design. It stores artboards, vector paths, text layers, embedded images, and component symbols. Modern .SKETCH files (version 43 and newer) are technically ZIP archives containing structured JSON files and rendered PNG previews.

Natively, you must use the Sketch macOS app to open and edit these files. Because it is a proprietary, macOS-only format, users on Windows or Linux face immediate access blocks. Alternatively, cross-platform tools like Figma, Lunacy, and Adobe XD offer built-in import capabilities.

The core disadvantage of the .SKETCH format is its platform dependency and closed ecosystem. It requires a paid subscription and Apple hardware. Sharing these files with developers or clients who do not use Sketch creates massive friction. Complex symbols and plugin-dependent features often break or render incorrectly when forced into third-party software.

To ensure cross-platform access, users frequently convert .SKETCH files to FIG for collaborative cloud editing, PDF for client reviews, or SVG for web-ready vector assets. Be aware that complex prototyping links, responsive resizing constraints, or proprietary layer styles may be lost during the transition.

Because this file format is difficult to open or convert without native tools, standard online converters often fail. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SKETCH file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SKP, XD, JPG, ZIP, PNG, FIG, SKD, PDF, SKB, DMG, PKL, CRDOWNLOAD and AFDESIGN files.

The SKETCH Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SKETCH converter.
