The .dft file extension is most commonly a Solid Edge Draft Document created by Solid Edge, a 3D CAD parametric solid modeling software developed by Siemens. These files store 2D engineering drawings, annotations, and dimensions extracted from 3D models (par, asm, or psm files). Less frequently, a .dft file acts as a CAD/CAM sheet metal part for Metalix cncKad, a TopSolid Design file, or a simple text-based settings file for eJuice Me Up.
The major disadvantage of the .dft format is its proprietary nature. To view or edit a native Solid Edge .dft file, you need access to the expensive Solid Edge software or their specific viewer. It frequently relies on the older Microsoft Compound Document internal structure. This restricts cross-platform collaboration. You cannot open a .dft file in a web browser or on macOS natively, and standard CAD programs like AutoCAD cannot read it without translation.
To share these 2D drawings with clients or manufacturers, you must convert the .dft file. For universal viewing, archiving, and printing, convert to PDF. For editing in other CAD software, convert to standard vector formats like DWG or DXF. Note that converting from .dft to DXF will result in a loss of parametric links to the original 3D models.
