About DFT files

The .DFT file extension is most commonly associated with Solid Edge Draft Documents, the native 2D technical drawing format for Siemens Solid Edge. These files serve as the blueprint for manufacturing, containing orthographic views, dimensions, and bills of materials derived directly from 3D part (linked .PAR) or assembly (linked .ASM) models.

The Challenge: Proprietary Lock-in and Broken Links

A major difficulty for users is that .DFT files are associative. They often do not store the actual geometry but rather "project" it from the linked 3D files. If you receive a .DFT file without the accompanying 3D models, the drawing views may appear empty or disconnected, showing only "Draft Quality" placeholders. Furthermore, opening these files requires a paid Solid Edge license or a specific viewer, making them inaccessible to standard web browsers or other CAD programs like AutoCAD.

The Solution: Conversion Targets

To overcome these limitations, users should convert .DFT files based on their intent:

For Viewing & Printing: Convert to PDF. This creates a frozen, universally viewable snapshot of the drawing that preserves line weights and annotations without requiring CAD software.
For Editing in AutoCAD: Convert to DWG or DXF. This translates the proprietary views into standard vector entities that can be edited in almost any CAD software, including DraftSight and CorelDRAW.

To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to DFT, try Siemens Solid Edge or another comparable tool in the "2D CAD Technical Drawing" category.
