Because the format is proprietary to Acronis, users cannot open these files with standard operating system tools like Windows Explorer or macOS Finder. Accessing the data typically requires installing the full, paid Acronis software suite or a specific shell extension, which creates vendor lock-in. Furthermore, these files are often massive (ranging from gigabytes to terabytes), making them difficult to share or upload. In recent years, Acronis has transitioned to the TIBX format, leaving .TIB as a legacy standard that may face dwindling support in future software iterations.
