About VHD files
The .VHD extension is shared by two distinct but critical formats: Virtual Hard Disk images and VHDL Source Code.
1. Virtual Hard Disk (Disk Image): Originally developed by Connectix and adopted by Microsoft for Hyper-V and Virtual PC, this format mimics a physical hard drive, storing the entire contents of a virtual machine. While widely supported by Windows, .VHD files can be problematic due to their rigid size allocation and limited compatibility with non-Microsoft hypervisors like VMware or VirtualBox. Users commonly encounter problems when trying to migrate virtual machines (P2V or V2V) or when mounting these images on macOS or Linux. To solve these interoperability headaches, the best workflow is converting .VHD to VMDK (for VMware), VDI (for VirtualBox), or QCOW2 (for QEMU/KVM).
2. VHDL Source Code (Developer): In the realm of hardware engineering, .VHD stands for Very High Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language. These are plain text files used to describe the logic of FPGAs and ASICs, processed by tools like the Xilinx ISE Design Suite. A common challenge is that these files strictly require heavy, proprietary IDEs to compile or simulate. For documentation, archiving, or sharing logic without revealing the raw code, users frequently need to convert these text-based .VHD files to PDF or standard TXT.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VHD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert VHD file to VHDX, VMDK, ISO, VDI, QCOW2, IMG, OVA, WIM, JS, TS, PY or JAVA, you can use Hyper-V or similar software from the "Virtual Machine Storage / HDL Code" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SH, PY, KT, PS1, SWIFT, LUA, PL, JAVA, SCALA, JS, VBS or TS files to VHD, try Hyper-V or another comparable tool in the "Virtual Machine Storage / HDL Code" category.
The VHD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VHD converter.
