About VHD files

The .VHD file extension primarily serves two entirely different functions. It is either a Virtual Hard Disk image file or a VHDL Source Code file. As a Virtual Hard Disk, it replicates a physical hard drive to store virtual machine operating systems, programs, and data. It was originally created by Connectix and later acquired by Microsoft for Virtual PC and Hyper-V. The biggest disadvantage of the classic .VHD format is its 2 TB storage limit and its susceptibility to corruption during power failures compared to the modern VHDX standard. Furthermore, migrating a .VHD to a VMware environment requires manual conversion, as hypervisors prefer their own native formats. As a VHDL Source Code file, it contains text written in the VHSIC Hardware Description Language (IEEE standard). Engineers use these files in electronic design automation (EDA) to design FPGAs and integrated circuits using software like Xilinx ISE or Altera Quartus. Because they are plain text, opening them without the right IDE can result in formatting issues or a lack of syntax highlighting. To bypass hypervisor lock-in or read source code easily, you must convert these files. For Virtual Machines, convert .VHD to VHDX for better Hyper-V performance, to VMDK for VMware compatibility, or to VDI for VirtualBox. For VHDL code, convert to TXT for basic reading or V (Verilog) for alternative EDA pipelines.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VHD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted VHDL, VHDX, XDC, ZIP, VPHD, VDH, ISO, IMG, PDF, TXT, PNG, XPR and DO files.

FAQ

If you want to convert VHD file to VHDX, VMDK, ISO, VDI, QCOW2, IMG, OVA, WIM, JS, TS, PY or JAVA, you can use Hyper-V or similar software from the "Virtualization or EDA Tooling" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert SH, PY, KT, PS1, SWIFT, LUA, PL, JAVA, SCALA, JS, VBS or TS files to VHD, try Hyper-V or another comparable tool in the "Virtualization or EDA Tooling" category.

The VHD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VHD converter.
