About TG files
A .TG file is a guitar tablature and musical score project created by TuxGuitar, an open-source multitrack tablature editor. These files store musical notation, track arrangements, tempo settings, and instrument definitions, functioning as a free alternative to the proprietary Guitar Pro formats. While .TG files are excellent for composing and sharing tabs within the open-source community, they pose significant accessibility challenges. Because the format is specific to TuxGuitar, users cannot open these files in standard media players, web browsers, or even some commercial notation software without conversion. Musicians often need to share their work with bandmates who do not have the software installed, or they require a hard copy for practice. To overcome these limitations, the best workflow is to convert .TG files to PDF for universal printing and reading, MIDI for audio playback and synthesis, or MusicXML for importing into advanced notation suites like Sibelius or Finale.

The TG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TG converter.
