The .SUP extension primarily identifies Blu-ray Presentation Graphics Stream (PGS) subtitle files. Unlike the text-based SRT files commonly used on the web, .SUP files contain bitmap images of text that overlay the video. While this allows for precise styling and positioning on Blu-ray discs, it is often a source of frustration for users: the text cannot be edited in a standard text editor, file sizes are large, and many media players or TVs fail to display them. To make these subtitles editable or compatible with standard players (like VLC media player), users must convert them to SRT (SubRip) using OCR (Optical Character Recognition) tools like Subtitle Edit or BDSup2Sub.
Alternatively, a .SUP file may be a Support File generated by Ubiquiti devices for diagnostic purposes. These are technically GZIP compressed archives containing system logs. Users often encounter frustration trying to open these with standard viewers; however, they can be inspected by changing the extension to .tar.gz or using archive managers like 7-Zip to extract the configuration data inside.
