About PGS files

The .pgs file extension primarily represents the Presentation Graphic Stream, the standard subtitle format used on Blu-ray discs. Unlike SRT or ASS files which contain editable text, PGS subtitles are actually a sequence of bitmap images (pictures of text) with timecodes. This distinction is the #1 source of friction for users: you cannot simply open a PGS file in Notepad to correct a typo or change the font size. Because they are images, they have a large file size and are often not supported by web players or older TVs, forcing media servers like Plex or Emby to "burn" them in, which causes buffering.

To make these subtitles compatible or editable, they must be converted using OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software to turn the images back into text. The second, rarer use (0.9%) is a document created by PageStream (formerly Publishing Partner), a desktop publishing program. These files are proprietary layouts containing text and vector graphics, typically requiring the original software to view.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PGS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SUP, PAGES, DLW, NDCT and 85V files.
