About MKS files
An .MKS file is a Matroska Elementary Stream, a specific file type within the open-standard Matroska multimedia container family designed to hold independent data streams, most commonly subtitle tracks. Unlike the more popular MKV (video) or MKA (audio) formats, .MKS files act as distinct containers for subtitle data derived from the Matryoshka (Russian nesting doll) concept. While technical users appreciate the format's ability to store complex subtitle timing and styling data in a raw binary stream, this presents significant challenges for general use. Because .MKS is a binary container rather than a plain text file, users cannot simply open it in a text editor like Notepad to make quick corrections, nor is it natively supported by most web browsers or older hardware players. Users often find themselves unable to load these subtitles into standard players unless they are first muxed back into a video file. To overcome these compatibility hurdles and editing restrictions, the ideal workflow involves converting .MKS to SRT (SubRip) for maximum compatibility with players like VLC media player and smart TVs. For web-based video projects, converting to VTT (WebVTT) is recommended, while archiving or remuxing workflows benefit from merging the stream back into a standard MKV container.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MKS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The MKS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MKS converter.
