The .APKM format is a custom container developed by APKMirror to distribute "Split APKs" (Android App Bundles). Unlike a standard APK which contains all necessary resources in one file, modern Android apps are often split into a base file plus separate configuration files for specific screen densities, CPU architectures, and languages to save space. A standard Android system cannot natively install these bundles from a direct download, creating a significant downside: users are forced to install the APKMirror Installer just to open the file.
For users who need to inspect the app contents, run the app on an emulator like BlueStacks, or perform a manual ADB installation, this proprietary wrapper is an obstacle. The most practical solution is converting - or simply renaming - the .APKM file to ZIP. Since the internal structure is a standard compressed archive, this allows you to extract the base.apk and relevant config splits. While combining these back into a single universal APK requires complex developer tools (like bundletool), converting to ZIP grants immediate access to the internal logic and resources without proprietary lock-in.
