About VTT files
The .VTT (Web Video Text Tracks) file is the standard format for displaying timed text - such as subtitles, captions, or descriptions - in HTML5 video players using the <track> element. Developed by the W3C, it is essential for web accessibility and SEO on platforms like YouTube and Vimeo.
While .VTT is native to the web, it presents significant compatibility challenges in offline environments. Many legacy media players, televisions, and editing suites (such as older versions of Adobe Premiere Pro) do not natively support the VTT format, preferring the simpler SRT (SubRip) standard instead. Additionally, raw .VTT files contain metadata headers (WEBVTT) and timecodes that make them difficult to read as a plain transcript. Users frequently need to convert .VTT to SRT for universal playback compatibility, or to TXT and DOCX to create readable scripts and archives.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VTT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert VTT file to SRT, TXT, MP4, PDF, MP3, VIDEO, AVI, MOV, WMV, FLV, WEBM or MKV, you can use Aegisub or similar software from the "HTML5 Video Captions" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MTS, MOV, RMVB, DIVX, RM, H264, TS, WMV, VOB, MP4, XVID or AVI files to VTT, try Aegisub or another comparable tool in the "HTML5 Video Captions" category.
The VTT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VTT converter.
