About VTT files

The .VTT format, or Web Video Text Tracks, is a W3C standard for displaying timed text, subtitles, and captions in HTML5 web videos. These files are linked directly via the <track> element in modern web pages.

Users typically manage these files with specialized subtitle editing software like Aegisub or standard text editors. You can find more historical and technical data on the Wikipedia page for WebVTT.

Despite its status as the web standard, the .VTT format presents significant challenges. Many offline media players, smart TVs, and legacy video editing platforms fail to recognize .VTT files natively. The format demands strict syntax - specifically requiring the word WEBVTT on the first line - and even a minor formatting error can cause the entire subtitle track to fail silently. Furthermore, attempting to read a .VTT file as a simple transcript is frustrating, as the text is cluttered with timestamps, styling tags, and cue IDs.

To resolve compatibility issues for offline viewing or hardware playback, convert .VTT to SRT (SubRip), the universally supported legacy format. If you need a clean, readable script for documentation or editing without the timecodes, convert .VTT to TXT or CSV. Drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VTT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DD2VTT, GMT, MP4, TXT, WTT, VRT, JPG, DOCX, SRT, ATT, VTS, M4A and ITT files.
