About SRS files

The .srs file extension serves multiple distinct purposes across different software ecosystems. Its most common function is as an Outlook Send/Receive Settings File used by Microsoft Outlook. These files use the Microsoft Compound binary format to store user preferences for background email synchronization. However, the .srs extension is heavily overloaded. It is also used as an audio or video file container (often wrapping standard MP3, FLAC, or MKV data) generated by tools like SRS Audio Sandbox or pyReSample. Additionally, developers use it for compiled proxy rulesets in Sing-box, while Anki flashcard software utilizes it for SQLite-based spaced repetition decks.

The primary disadvantage of the .srs format is its extreme fragmentation. Because the extension is shared by proprietary email configurations, audio files, databases, and proxy rulesets, standard operating systems cannot reliably open them. Outlook .srs files are notorious for becoming silently corrupted, causing email sync failures. These files require a $50/month Microsoft 365 subscription to utilize properly and are entirely closed-source.

Converting an .srs file depends heavily on its internal data. If your file is a media file from pyReSample, it should be converted to universally supported targets like MP3, WAV, or MP4 for cross-platform playback. Anki flashcard decks can be extracted into CSV or TXT files to preserve the raw text data. Outlook settings files generally cannot be converted to readable formats because they lack structural data outside of the Outlook environment.

Because this is an overloaded, often proprietary format, standard online converters fail to process it. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like an MP3 stream or an SQLite table - viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SRS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SRR, HTML, RAR, NFO, TXT, QRP, BIN, XAPK, OLM, OFT, OLK, PSD and CPF files.

The SRS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SRS converter.
