About NFO files

The .NFO (Info) file extension is shared by three distinct formats, creating a common conflict on Windows systems. The most prevalent type is a plain text file used by the Warez scene and media enthusiasts to store release notes, installation instructions, and elaborate ASCII art. A secondary, yet significant, use is by Kodi for storing XML-based media metadata. However, the Windows operating system natively claims this extension for its System Information tool (MSInfo32).

This conflict creates a major friction point: users double-clicking a text-based .NFO file often encounter a "System Information cannot open this file" error because Windows attempts to parse plain text as a system report. Furthermore, standard text editors may distort the monospaced layout required to view ASCII art correctly.
