About SNAPSHOT files
The .snapshot extension is a generic label used by various software developers to capture the exact state of a system, application, or dataset at a specific moment in time. Most frequently, this file is a performance profile generated by YourKit Java Profiler, containing deep-level data on memory usage, CPU performance, and thread states. These binary files are critical for debugging Java applications but are notoriously difficult to handle because they are proprietary; you cannot simply open them in a standard text editor. Other common variations include system monitoring logs from Netdata (often just renamed JSON files) or model checkpoints from frameworks like PyTorch (which are typically ZIP archives). The main source of friction is ambiguity: without knowing the originating software, the file appears as an unreadable binary blob. For YourKit files, the only reliable workflow is to open them in the profiler and export the data to CSV, HTML, or PNG for reporting. For Netdata snapshots, changing the extension to JSON often makes them readable in web browsers. If the file is a backup from Tekla Structures or PyTorch, it may be a compressed archive; changing the extension to ZIP or GZ can allow you to extract the internal data.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SNAPSHOT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert SNAPSHOT file to PDF, TEXT, JPG, TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW, PART or DOWNLOAD, you can use YourKit Java Profiler or similar software from the "Java Profiler Performance Snapshot" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DEVICE, CACHE, SOCK, SYMLINK, PID, MOUNT, FIFO, LOG, PIPE, TMP, JUNCTION or TEMP files to SNAPSHOT, try YourKit Java Profiler or another comparable tool in the "Java Profiler Performance Snapshot" category.
The SNAPSHOT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SNAPSHOT converter.
