About SNAPSHOT files

A .snapshot file represents a point-in-time dump of a system, database, or application. This file extension is highly fragmented and used by entirely unrelated software. The most common use is a Java profiler performance snapshot generated by the YourKit Java Profiler. Other prominent uses include Netdata system monitoring data, PyTorch machine learning models, and Tekla Structures 3D model views. The primary disadvantage of a .snapshot file is its lack of standardization. It is generally a proprietary binary blob or a specialized archive tightly coupled to its parent application. For example, a YourKit snapshot requires an active commercial license to analyze memory leaks, while a PyTorch snapshot is tied to specific Python environment states. Standard online converters fail to process them because the extension does not guarantee a specific underlying structure. Converting a .snapshot file is therefore difficult. You typically need the exact original software to read or export the data to readable target formats like JSON, CSV, or TXT. However, PyTorch and Tekla snapshots are actually standard ZIP and GZIP archives, meaning you can often extract their raw contents manually. Because this file format is difficult to open or convert, identifying its true origin is the first step. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format like JSON or a compressed archive, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SNAPSHOT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SNP, FXSNAPSHOT, PNG, PDF, JPG, DOCX, VMSN, LCK, VMX and TEXT files.

The SNAPSHOT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SNAPSHOT converter.
