A .TEXT file typically functions as a standard plain text document. It stores raw, human-readable characters without any styling or formatting metadata. You can open these files using standard text editors like Notepad++, Apple TextEdit, or Microsoft Word. In software development, the .text naming convention is also used to identify the executable code section within Executable and Linkable Format (ELF) or Portable Executable (PE) files containing raw machine code.
The main disadvantage of a .TEXT file is poor system compatibility and severe feature limits. Windows and macOS natively expect the TXT extension for plain text. Using the non-standard .TEXT extension often breaks file associations, requiring manual application selection when double-clicking. Furthermore, plain text cannot store images, hyperlinks, or font styles. If the file is an extracted binary code section, it is completely illegible to humans and requires a hex editor.
