Convert VMX to another file type

To convert VMX configuration files to another format, you need VMware Workstation or other Settings software.

Convert a file to VMX

To convert other file formats to the "Virtual Machine Parameters" file type, you need software like VMware Workstation or a similar tool.

About VMX files

A .VMX file is primarily a VMware Virtual Machine Configuration file utilized by VMware Workstation, VMware Fusion, and VMware ESXi. It contains the exact hardware parameters for a virtual machine (VM), dictating memory allocation, hard disk limits, CPU cores, and network interface bridging. Because it is essentially a structured plain text file, it controls how the hypervisor software boots and runs the corresponding massive VMDK (Virtual Machine Disk) data file.

Less commonly, the .VMX extension is generated by Valve's Source engine as a Valve Map Backup File to save previous iterations of 3D level designs, or by Steinberg's Cubase as a Mixer Settings File storing audio mixing configurations.

The main disadvantage of the .VMX format in a virtualization context is that it is strictly proprietary to the VMware ecosystem. If you attempt to migrate your virtual machine to a competing hypervisor like VirtualBox or Hyper-V, those systems cannot read the .VMX configuration directly. You generally need to convert the entire VM to an Open Virtualization Format (OVF or OVA). Furthermore, because the .VMX file only stores text settings and points to external disks rather than holding the actual data, standard online document or image converters fail entirely when attempting to process it.

This file format is inherently difficult to convert into standard media because the virtualization parameters are meaningless outside of a hypervisor. Often, only the original software can properly read, export, or package the data for another platform. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view the plain text, and convert it to TXT, JSON, or XML when possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VMX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted VWX, VMDK, ISO, 7Z, TXT, EXE, PDF, VM, NVRAM, OVF, OVA, VHDX and QCOW2 files.

FAQ

If you want to convert VMX file to OVF, OVA, VHDX, QCOW2, ISO, VMDK, INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON or XML, you can use VMware Workstation or similar software from the "Virtual Machine Configuration Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to VMX, try VMware Workstation or another comparable tool in the "Virtual Machine Configuration Storage" category.

The VMX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VMX converter.
