About VMX files

The .VMX file is the primary configuration file for virtual machines created with VMware Workstation, VMware Fusion, or VMware ESXi. It functions as the "brain" of the virtual machine, a plain-text file that dictates hardware settings such as RAM allocation, network adapter types, and the paths to the actual hard drive files (.VMDK).

While the text-based nature of .VMX files allows for manual editing in editors like Notepad++, users often face significant friction when trying to migrate these machines to other hypervisors like Oracle VirtualBox or Microsoft Hyper-V due to proprietary parameter syntax and absolute file paths. A common issue is the file becoming "orphaned" or corrupted, requiring manual reconstruction. For migration, simply converting the .VMX text is insufficient; the entire VM package must be processed.

For cross-platform compatibility, the best practice is converting the VM setup (sourced from the .VMX) into the open standard OVF (Open Virtualization Format) using the OVF Tool. For documentation or auditing purposes, the .VMX file itself can be converted to PDF or TXT to preserve a snapshot of the machine's configuration state.
