The .SNAGX format is a proprietary screen capture file used by TechSmith Snagit starting with the 2022 release. It stores screenshots alongside layered vector annotations, cursors, and text objects. This format replaced the older Windows-only SNAG and macOS-only SNAGPROJ formats to allow seamless cross-platform editing between Windows and Mac.
While useful within the software, .SNAGX has serious disadvantages for sharing. It is a closed, proprietary format. Files are large because they retain full edit history, unflattened layers, and embedded metadata. Most importantly, recipients cannot open a .SNAGX file unless they have an active, paid Snagit license. Web browsers, standard operating system image viewers, and document managers do not support it natively.
To share your captures reliably, you must convert .SNAGX to standard formats like PNG, JPG, or PDF. Converting to these standard targets flattens the image, meaning vector text and shape layers are permanently merged with the background and cannot be moved or edited later.
