About FIF files
The .FIF format primarily functions as a functional neuroimaging data file. It is heavily utilized by Elekta Neuromag systems to store complex Magnetoencephalography (MEG) and Electroencephalography (EEG) recordings. A significant secondary use is the Fractal Image Format (FIF), an obsolete image compression method developed by Iterated Systems Inc. in the 1990s.
For neuroimaging data, scientists and researchers typically rely on specialized open-source software like MNE-Python or EEGLAB via MATLAB. To open the older fractal image variants, legacy viewers like XnView are required.
Handling .FIF files presents severe challenges for the average user. Neuroimaging .FIF files are massive, highly proprietary, and completely unreadable outside of dedicated scientific computing environments, requiring steep learning curves to extract basic data. Conversely, Fractal Image Format files are completely unsupported by modern web browsers, operating systems, and standard image editors, rendering them useless for current web or archival purposes.
Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software. For neuroimaging data, convert .FIF to CSV to read the numerical output in standard statistical software, or to EDF (European Data Format) for broader compatibility in medical tools, though some proprietary metadata may be lost. For legacy fractal images, convert directly to PNG for lossless archiving or JPG for web publishing.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your FIF file.
If you want to convert FIF file to EDF, SVG, AI, EPS, PDF, JPG, CDR, WMF, SWF, FLA or XFL, you can use MNE-Python or similar software from the "Neuroimaging Data or Legacy Image" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert AFPUB, EPS, FIG, VSD, SKETCH, VDX, AFPHOTO, PDF, AFDESIGN, SVG, VSDX or AI files to FIF, try MNE-Python or another comparable tool in the "Neuroimaging Data or Legacy Image" category.
The FIF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FIF converter.
