About SNAGPROJ files

A .SNAGPROJ file is a proprietary project file created by TechSmith Snagit, traditionally associated with the macOS version of the software. It stores captured screenshots alongside editable vector annotations, text callouts, stamps, and multi-layer composite data.

These files are designed exclusively to be opened and edited within Snagit. Under the hood, a .SNAGPROJ file is structured as an Apple plist (Property List) directory. This structure bundles the raw base raster image with mathematical descriptions of all applied effects, shapes, and annotations added by the user.

The main disadvantage of the .SNAGPROJ format is severe software lock-in. Because the format is strictly proprietary and relies on application-specific rendering, you cannot open these files in standard web browsers, basic system image viewers, or professional editing suites like Adobe Photoshop. If you share a .SNAGPROJ file with a client or colleague who does not own a paid Snagit license, they will be completely unable to view your screenshot.

To make these files usable, you must convert them to standard, widely supported raster formats like PNG, JPG, or PDF. Exporting to these targets flattens the image, which means you will lose the ability to move, edit, or delete the individual text boxes and arrows later.

This file format is exceptionally difficult for third-party tools to open or convert because only the original Snagit engine knows how to accurately draw the proprietary annotation layers over the base image. Standard online converters often fail entirely when handling these complex project containers. If our analysis detects the supported underlying embedded image format within the plist structure, viewing or partial conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SNAGPROJ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
