Convert SMT to another file type
To convert SMT files to another format, you need Autodesk or other 3D software.
Convert a file to SMT
To convert other file formats to the "Assembly Model / Settings" file type, you need software like Autodesk or a similar tool.
About SMT files
.SMT files are highly fragmented, meaning the extension is used by completely different industries. Most commonly, they represent Autodesk Assembly Models or Autodesk Shape Manager Text files used in professional 3D CAD modeling. Alternatively, audio engineers encounter them as tempo track data in Steinberg Cubase, while mobile users might see them as Samsung Theme files. PCB designers also use the .SMT extension for Gerber Top Solder Mask files in Altium Designer. Because the extension is shared across fundamentally different software, users frequently struggle to open it.
The primary disadvantage of the .SMT format is vendor lock-in. You cannot open an Autodesk .SMT in an audio editor, nor can you extract a Cubase tempo map using CAD software. The Autodesk 3D variant is a closed, proprietary format requiring a costly software subscription just to view the NURBS geometry. Standard online converters fail to process it because the internal binary structure is undocumented. Similarly, Cubase tempo tracks are only usable within the Steinberg ecosystem. To share Autodesk models, your best conversion targets are universal formats like STEP or IGES, but this usually requires native export. For Cubase, the standard target is MIDI.
This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert because only the original software can properly read or export the specialized data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying format - such as a standard ZIP archive (used by Samsung themes) or a plain text structure (used by Gerber files) - viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SMT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert SMT file to SFT, RMT, SYD, MIDI, DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM or STEP, you can use Autodesk or similar software from the "3D Assembly & Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to SMT, try Autodesk or another comparable tool in the "3D Assembly & Data Storage" category.
The SMT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SMT converter.
