About RMT files
The .RMT file format is primarily used for Electronic Remittance Advice (ERA) data. In the healthcare sector, it operates under the ANSI ASC X12 835 standard to deliver detailed payment information from insurance payers to healthcare providers. A secondary corporate use involves beef remittance advice files utilized by agricultural processors like Dawn Meats. These files act as digital receipts detailing what claims or invoices were paid, denied, or adjusted.
To properly open and parse these files, users typically rely on dedicated healthcare practice management software or Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) translators. While you can open a raw healthcare .RMT file with a text editor like Notepad++, the text is formatted as a continuous stream of EDI segments separated by tildes (~). This makes it practically unreadable for standard users without technical training.
Users usually need to convert .RMT files because raw EDI data cannot be easily reviewed by accounting staff or imported into standard spreadsheet software. The primary disadvantage of the format is its rigid, machine-readable structure. Furthermore, healthcare .RMT files often contain highly sensitive Protected Health Information (PHI), which adds strict security and compliance hurdles when handling them.
The most practical conversion targets are CSV for data analysis in Microsoft Excel or PDF for archival and printing. Converting to CSV flattens the hierarchical EDI data, meaning complex claim adjustments might be simplified or separated into multiple tables, potentially losing some of the relational context.
Because .RMT files rely on complex EDI mapping rules or closed corporate data structures, standard online converters usually fail to process them. Often, only the original billing software or a specialized EDI parser can properly read or export the data into a human-readable layout. However, just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the exact format, safely inspect the file's raw internal content, and convert it when supported. If our analysis detects standard text-based EDI segments, viewing the raw claim data or converting it may still be possible.

The RMT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RMT converter.
