About RMT files
The .rmt extension is a source of confusion because it serves two completely different professional sectors. In the majority of cases (approx. 54%), an RMT file is a Remittance Advice document used in healthcare or agricultural supply chains. These are essentially plain text or EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) data streams used to detail payment breakdowns. For example, suppliers for Dawn Meats use this format to import slaughter details into agricultural software like Farmplan. Similarly, healthcare providers receive RMT files (often based on the ANSI 835 standard) containing insurance payment explanations.
The primary limitation is that these files are designed for machine processing, not human reading. Opening them in a standard text editor reveals a chaotic stream of delimiters (like *, ~, or |) without formatting. To make this data usable for accounting, users need to convert the raw data to CSV or XLSX (Excel) to filter rows, or PDF for archiving formal invoices.
Separately, in the retro-computing community, .RMT stands for Raster Music Tracker module. These are 8-bit chiptune audio projects created for Atari XE/XL computers. They cannot be played by standard media players like Windows Media Player. To share this music, you must use the original tracker software to render the project as a standard MP3 or WAV audio file.

The RMT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RMT converter.
