About SKL files

The .SKL file format primarily stores 3D skeletal rigging data used for character animation in video games. The majority of these files are associated with League of Legends by Riot Games, as well as titles built on the Gamebryo game engine or Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer. In 3D computer graphics, a skeleton provides the bone hierarchy that dictates how a 3D mesh deforms during animation. A completely different secondary use for .SKL is engine management calibration files for Hondata S-Manager. A rare third variant is associated with the Skeletor Ransomware, which wraps encrypted user data into a ZIP archive with an appended .skl extension.

Users typically need to convert .SKL files when extracting game assets to modify them in standard 3D modeling software like Autodesk 3ds Max or Autodesk Maya. The fundamental disadvantage of the .SKL format is its heavily fragmented and proprietary nature. A League of Legends skeleton is incompatible with a Gamebryo skeleton. These files are tightly bound to specific game engines and require specialized modding tools or import scripts to read. They cannot be opened natively by modern web browsers or standard 3D viewers.

To effectively edit or reuse the rigging, you must convert the .SKL file to universally supported animation formats like FBX or DAE (Collada). During this conversion, expect to lose specific game engine metadata, physics constraints, and custom shader links, though the base bone hierarchy usually remains intact.

Because there is no unified specification, standard online converters fail to process .SKL files. Often, only the original game engine can properly parse the binary data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying format - such as the ZIP structure used by ransomware or readable tuning values - viewing or extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SKL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SKN, SKP, SLK, STL, HTML, FBX, JPG, ZIP, MA, MB and RFA files.

FAQ

If you want to convert SKL file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL, PLY or WRL, you can use Autodesk 3ds Max or similar software from the "3D Skeletal Rigging Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to SKL, try Autodesk 3ds Max or another comparable tool in the "3D Skeletal Rigging Data" category.

The SKL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SKL converter.
