Convert MA to another file type
To convert MA scenes to another format, you need Autodesk Maya or other 3D software.
Convert a file to MA
To convert other file formats to the "Maya ASCII Scene" file type, you need software like Autodesk Maya or a similar tool.
About MA files
The .ma file format is primarily used by Autodesk Maya as a Maya ASCII project file. It contains a sequential list of MEL (Maya Embedded Language) commands that instruct the software on how to reconstruct the 3D scene. This data includes polygon geometry, NURBS curves, lighting data, material properties, and complex animation keyframes.
To natively open, render, and edit these files, you need Autodesk Maya. Because the file is written in standard ASCII text, minor edits, script adjustments, or debugging can technically be done using basic text editors like Notepad. Less commonly, the .ma extension is used for MicroStation resource files by Bentley Systems and embroidery backdrops in Elna X-Pressive.
The major disadvantage of the .ma format is its proprietary software dependency and enormous file size. Because every node and connection is written out in plain text, complex scenes with millions of polygons generate gigantic, bloated files compared to binary formats. Furthermore, sharing a .ma file with a client or collaborator is extremely frustrating unless they also pay for a costly Maya subscription. It cannot be opened by web browsers, standard OS preview tools, or competing 3D suites like Blender without expensive workarounds.
To bypass these restrictions, conversion is the most practical solution. For importing into Blender or game engines like Unity, convert to FBX. For basic 3D printing or sharing static meshes, convert to OBJ or STL. If you need to embed the 3D object directly onto a webpage, convert to GLTF or GLB. Note that while base geometry and UV maps transfer flawlessly, proprietary Maya-specific rigs and complex procedural shaders will usually be baked or lost during the conversion process.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MA file to A, AMP, FBX, OBJ, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MB, C4D, STL or PLY, you can use Autodesk Maya or similar software from the "3D Scene Description" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to MA, try Autodesk Maya or another comparable tool in the "3D Scene Description" category.
The MA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MA converter.
