About SFD files
The .SFD file extension is primarily known for two distinct and incompatible formats: the Sofdec Video Movie file and the Spline Font Database file.
Sofdec video files were created by CRI Middleware and were heavily used for full-motion video (FMV) cutscenes in classic console games on the Sega Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, and Nintendo GameCube. Under the hood, this format is a multiplexed stream containing standard .MPEG-1 or .MPEG-2 video paired with proprietary ADX audio. The main disadvantage of this format is its obsolescence. It is a dead, proprietary container. Modern operating systems, web browsers, and mobile devices cannot play .SFD files natively because they lack the necessary CRI ADX audio decoders. For viewing or archiving these game cutscenes, you must convert the file to MP4 or MKV.
Alternatively, an .SFD file can be a Spline Font Database file used by the open-source font editor FontForge. This is a plain text or XML-based project file that stores vector outlines, kerning pairs, and hinting instructions. The major limitation of a Spline Font Database is that it is a working project file, not a compiled font. You cannot install an .SFD file in Windows or macOS, and it is not supported by web browsers. To use the font in graphic design or web development, you must export or convert it to an installable format like TTF (TrueType), OTF (OpenType), or WOFF (Web Open Font Format).

The SFD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SFD converter.
