The .MPB file extension primarily represents a MyPhoneExplorer Backup File, created by the MyPhoneExplorer Android synchronization software developed by Franz Josef Wechselberger. These files store archived SMS messages, contacts, call logs, and calendar entries from a mobile device. A secondary, but highly critical, use for .MPB files is as a Management Pack Bundle used by Microsoft System Center Operations Manager (SCOM). These are Microsoft Compound files containing an XML management pack and associated resources like scripts or images. Other legacy uses include old multipart MMS messages from Sony Ericsson or Motorola phones, and encrypted game data tables for Tencent mobile games.
The major disadvantage of .MPB files is their proprietary nature. MyPhoneExplorer backups cannot be read natively by modern smartphones, Google Contacts, or standard text editors. Similarly, Microsoft SCOM bundles are opaque binary containers that require specialized Microsoft infrastructure to inspect.
