About AFS files

The .AFS file extension primarily represents a proprietary game asset archive developed by CRI Middleware. These files were heavily used in classic console games, particularly on Sega platforms, to bundle audio tracks, 3D models, and textures. Secondarily, .AFS files are used as foundation analysis project files by Bentley STAAD Foundation Advanced, relying on an internal JetDB database. Game archives require specialized community extractors like AFS Explorer to access the media, while the engineering files require an expensive Bentley software subscription to open. The main disadvantage of the .AFS format is its completely closed, proprietary nature. Game files act as black boxes, locking away media from modders and archivists, while engineering files trap data inside complex relational databases. Standard online converters fail completely because they lack the specific extraction algorithms needed for CRI Middleware or JetDB structures. The goal is usually extraction rather than direct conversion: extracting game audio to WAV or textures to PNG. For engineering files, users often want to export structural data to PDF or CSV. Because this is a closed format, conversion is notoriously difficult.

Convert.Guru analyzes your AFS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ADX, ASF, MP3, SFD, MLT, CPK, AWB, ZIP, DGN, SVF and UPF files.

The AFS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AFS converter.
