About AFS files
The .AFS file extension primarily denotes a CRI Middleware Audio File System archive, a container format ubiquitous in console gaming, particularly within legacy Sega titles on the Dreamcast and PlayStation 2. These files function as virtual directories, encapsulating thousands of raw game assets - typically proprietary audio (ADX, AHX) and video streams - into a single, manageable block.
While efficient for game engines, this proprietary structure poses significant challenges for end-users. You cannot open an .AFS file in standard media players like VLC or edit it in Audacity without first unpacking the contents. The internal data is often encoded in specialized formats that require a second layer of conversion even after extraction. For structural engineers, an .AFS file may alternatively represent a STAAD.foundation project file created by Bentley Systems, used to store foundation analysis data.
To access the media inside a game archive, the best workflow is to extract the contents and convert proprietary audio streams to WAV or MP3 for listening, or standard video formats for viewing. For STAAD users, conversion is typically limited to exporting reports to PDF or interoperable CAD formats via the native software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AFS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert AFS file to MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS, ALAC, APE or WV, you can use AFS Explorer or similar software from the "Game Asset Archive" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to AFS, try AFS Explorer or another comparable tool in the "Game Asset Archive" category.
The AFS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AFS converter.
