To convert other file formats to the "CRI Middleware Video" file type, you need software like CRIWARE SDK or a similar tool.
About USM files
The .usm file extension is primarily a CRI Middleware Video file, utilizing proprietary CRIWARE technology. Game developers widely use this format to store pre-rendered cutscenes and Full Motion Video (FMV) sequences in PC and console video games. A secondary, rarer use is as a Unity Scene File.
To open or play .usm files natively, you typically need specialized demuxing tools like VGMToolbox or access to the official proprietary SDK. Standard media players like VLC media player or Windows Media Player do not support this format out of the box.
Because .usm is a proprietary, often encrypted container, its usability outside of the game engine is severely restricted. You cannot upload a .usm file to YouTube, embed it in a web page, or play it on a smartphone. Furthermore, the container multiplexes video streams with proprietary audio formats (like HCA or ADX), making editing in software like Adobe Premiere Pro impossible without a prior demuxing and conversion step.
To make these videos usable, you must convert them. For general playback, editing, and web sharing, convert to MP4 (which utilizes the universally supported H.264 codec). If you want to archive the video without losing multiple audio tracks, convert to MKV. If you only need the game's soundtrack, extract the audio to WAV or MP3. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The USM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our USM converter.
