About WOFF files
The .WOFF file is a Web Open Font Format file primarily used to deliver custom typography over the internet. Developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), it functions as a lightweight wrapper for standard TTF (TrueType) or OTF (OpenType) fonts. It applies zlib compression to reduce file sizes and decrease website load times. Web developers deploy these files via CSS @font-face rules. You can inspect or modify these fonts using open-source typographic tools like FontForge.
The primary disadvantage of a .WOFF file is its strict web-centric design. You cannot double-click and install a .WOFF file on Windows or macOS for local use in desktop software like Microsoft Word or Adobe Illustrator. It is explicitly not supported by system-level font managers, meaning offline graphic design with a downloaded web font is impossible without modification.
To use a web font locally, you must convert it. The best target formats are TTF or OTF. The conversion process typically extracts the core font data and removes the compressed web wrapper. Keep in mind that some .WOFF files include proprietary XML licensing metadata that will be lost during extraction, and certain web-specific rendering optimizations might not translate perfectly to desktop environments.
Because this format serves as a protected container often embedded with specific licensing restrictions, extracting the underlying font can be difficult. Standard online converters frequently fail when encountering DRM or unusual compression. If our analysis detects the supported underlying standard font data, viewing or extracting it to a usable desktop format may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WOFF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert WOFF file to TTF, OTF, WOFF2, SVG, CSS, TIFF, EOT, BDF, PCF, FNT, FON or PFM, you can use FontForge or similar software from the "Web Font Delivery" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The WOFF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WOFF converter.
