About PFA files
A .PFA (Printer Font ASCII) file is a legacy representation of a PostScript Type 1 font, encoded in ASCII text. Historically favored on Unix and Linux systems (while Windows preferred the binary PFB format), these files contain the glyph outlines required for printing. However, .PFA files present significant challenges in modern workflows. Most notably, Adobe completely discontinued support for PostScript Type 1 fonts in January 2023 within Creative Cloud apps like Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
This means opening older archives often results in "missing font" errors that break your design layout. Additionally, .PFA files are not self-contained; they typically require a separate metrics file (.AFM or .PFM) to render spacing correctly, doubling the file management burden. They are also incompatible with modern web design standards. To salvage these assets, the best practice is to convert .PFA to OTF (OpenType) or TTF (TrueType) for desktop editing, or WOFF2 for web deployment. In rare cases, a .PFA file might be a floor plan schematic from Microspace Profloor, which requires specific CAD software to view.

The PFA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PFA converter.
