About PFA files

The .PFA file extension primarily represents a Printer Font ASCII file. These are PostScript Type 1 fonts developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated for early desktop publishing. A secondary, much rarer use case for .PFA files is as schematic floor planning files created by Microspace Profloor software.

The main problem with .PFA font files is obsolescence. Adobe officially ended support for PostScript Type 1 fonts in January 2023. Modern software like Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator will not recognize these files, resulting in "missing font" errors. Furthermore, modern operating systems no longer support legacy utilities like Adobe Type Manager, meaning you cannot install a .PFA file natively on Windows 11 or macOS. As plain ASCII files, they are also larger and less efficient than their binary counterpart, the PFB file.
