These files utilize Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation (ADPCM) to store background music (BGM) and voiceovers efficiently without consuming excessive CPU resources. While optimized for gaming, this format presents significant barriers for end-users: .ADX files are effectively "locked" to the game engine and cannot be opened by standard media players like Windows Media Player or Apple Music. To listen to game soundtracks or edit the audio, users must convert them. For general listening, converting to MP3 or AAC is ideal. For archiving or editing without generation loss, WAV or FLAC are the recommended targets.
Less commonly, an .ADX file may be an Absolute Database index file by ComponentAce, or a compiled source file for Sage X3 (formerly Adonix) ERP systems.
