The .SEP file extension is most frequently associated with SEE Electrical, a leading CAD software package by IGE+XAO used for creating electrical wiring diagrams and schematics. These project files act as containers for critical engineering data, including circuit layouts, component lists, and terminal matrixes.
A major challenge with .SEP files is their proprietary nature; they generally cannot be opened without a licensed copy of SEE Electrical, which can be a significant barrier for clients or contractors who only need to view the design. Furthermore, newer versions of the software may create files backward-incompatible with older viewers. To overcome this, users typically convert these electrical schematics to PDF for universal viewing or DXF/DWG for editing in standard CAD tools like AutoCAD.
A secondary but significant use (approx. 11% of files) is the ShuSheng Electronic Document. Originating from China, these are secure, XML-based document files used for government and academic papers. Less commonly, a .SEP file may be a Separated Image File, containing a single color channel (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, or Black) intended for prepress workflows. These are essentially split TIFF images and are best converted to a composite JPG or PNG for digital display.
