About SEB files

A .SEB file is a secure exam configuration file. Educational institutions use it to lock down a student's computer during online assessments.

The primary software used to open and execute these files is the Safe Exam Browser, an open-source lockdown browser developed by ETH Zurich. Internally, the file is usually an XML file, which is often compressed with GZIP to reduce size.

Users frequently try to convert or open this file to view the exam start URL or analyze the restrictions. The major disadvantage of the .SEB format is its proprietary, strict nature. You cannot open it in a standard web browser like Chrome or Safari. It requires a specific, often pre-configured installation of the Safe Exam Browser. Furthermore, if the school encrypts the file, the contents become unreadable without the correct password.

The best conversion targets are XML or TXT. Converting to these formats allows you to inspect the raw configuration parameters in a text editor.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because it is a proprietary settings container, not a standard document. Often, only the original software can properly read or apply the data. Standard online converters fail to process it. If our analysis detects the supported underlying XML or GZ format, viewing the internal text content or extracting the settings is usually still possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SEB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted WSEB, EXAM, EXAMSOBAT, SBE, SAV, TXT, PDF, SEP, TSX, CSV, JPEG, LAYOUT and RAR files.
