About SD files

The .SD file extension is a chameleon, representing three distinct file types that require completely different conversion approaches. Most commonly, it is an ArcGIS Service Definition file, which acts as a consolidated snapshot of GIS map services, data, and settings ready for publication. Under the hood, this is actually a 7z compressed archive; however, because it is generated by Esri ArcGIS Pro, users without this expensive enterprise software often find themselves unable to view or extract the geographic data locked inside.

In creative circles, an .SD file likely refers to a Sound Designer audio file. Originally developed by Digidesign (now part of Avid), this legacy format was the industry standard for Macintosh-based audio editing. These files often rely on Mac-specific "resource forks" that are stripped away on Windows or Linux systems, rendering the audio unplayable. Converting these to WAV, AIFF, or MP3 is essential for modern DAW compatibility and archival.

Finally, in scientific research, .SD files contain UV-Vis spectral data generated by instruments from manufacturers like Shimadzu or Agilent. These proprietary binary files create a "vendor lock-in," preventing researchers from analyzing their own experimental data in standard tools like Microsoft Excel or Python. Converting these to CSV or JSON frees the data for universal analysis.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted S, MP4, TXT, SDF, SOS, MAPX, 3DD, HD, SE, MYR, RM and SEM files.

The SD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SD converter.
